The English in Particular

England   2014-2016

England is a land of extraordinary variety, rich in buildings, landscapes peoples and wildlife but this diversity is under siege.  Mass production, fashion, increased mobility and the forceful promotion of corporate identity have brought with them standardised shop fronts, farm buildings, factories, forests and front doors, while intensive farming has created a bland, empty countryside.  Since 1982, the charity Common Ground has been encouraging us to appreciate and stand up for what is significant about our surroundings - the commonplace, the local, the vernacular and the distinctive.  This series of portraits of "The English in Particular" was inspired by the book "England in Particular" published by Common Ground in 2006.
