Appletreewick
5 February 2025 & 29 June 2025
Although modest in size, Appletreewick has long been associated with a strong sense of local identity rooted in agriculture, farming, and countryside traditions. Surrounded by limestone hills, dry stone walls, and grazing pasture, farming continues to play an important role in the local economy and culture, while village events provide opportunities for residents and visitors alike to celebrate rural life and heritage.
Among the most distinctive are the annual ferret racing (in February) and terrier racing (in June) competitions. These events reflect traditions that emerged from practical working relationships between people and animals in the countryside. Ferrets were used in rabbiting and small-scale food gathering while terriers were historically valued for pest control.
