Humber Bridge

Barnsley is a town whose identity has been shaped by coal, industry, and community. Situated in South Yorkshire, it grew rapidly during the 19th and 20th centuries as the surrounding coalfield became one of the most productive in Britain. Mining dominated the local economy and social life, with generations of families employed in collieries that stretched across the borough. The town’s markets, civic buildings, working men’s clubs, and tightly knit communities were all products of a landscape defined by coal.
