Barrow-in-Furness

Humber Bridge

Barrow-in-Furness is a town defined by industry, its identity forged through shipbuilding, steel, and engineering that once placed it at the forefront of British manufacturing. The vast docklands and shipyards shaped both the physical landscape and the lives of generations of workers, embedding a strong sense of pride and purpose within the community.

Today, Barrow exists largely in the shadow of BAE Systems, whose submarine programme dominates the local economy and sustains employment in highly specialised fields. This concentration brings stability for some, yet also leaves the town reliant on a single major employer. Alongside this, the presence of offshore wind turbines in the Irish Sea signals a gradual shift toward renewable energy, hinting at new possibilities while underscoring
the region’s ongoing connection to energy production.
