Boulby
Boulby Mine, 10 February 2025
At the edge of the North York Moors, where land meets the North Sea, Boulby Mine extends deep beneath the surface - one of the deepest mines in Europe and a site where geology, industry and space science converge. This deep mine (over 1km below the surface) is also home to Boulby Underground Laboratory and the UK Centre for Astrobiology.
Now operated by ICL Group, Boulby is the world’s first and only producer of polyhalite, a rare, naturally occurring mineral formed over 250 million years ago during the evaporation of ancient seas.
