Gawthorpe
Easter Monday, 21 April 2025
Gawthorpe, a former coal-mining village in West Yorkshire, hosts the World Coal Carrying Championships each Easter Monday - an event that transforms a simple test of strength into a powerful expression of local heritage and identity. Competitors race just over a kilometre along a village route, carrying sacks of coal weighing 50kg for men and 20kg for women. The spectacle is both demanding and celebratory, drawing participants and spectators from across the region.
