Halifax
10 May 2026
Halifax grew from a modest market settlement, through a 12th century religious centre and 15th century economic hub of woollen manufacture, into one of the great mill towns of the Industrial Revolution, its steep valleys and fast-flowing streams providing the power needed for textile production.
By the 19th century, the town had become internationally associated with woollen manufacturing and carpet production, its landscape dominated by mills, warehouses, chimneys, and tightly packed terraced housing
built for generations of industrial workers.
