Horden was once a thriving coal mining village, built around the success of its colliery, and home to a strong, close-knit working community. Construction of the colliery began in 1900 and in the 70s it was considered the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of the East Durham coalfield, with an expected life of another 30 years.
When the pit closed in 1987, the village entered a prolonged period of post-industrial decline. Jobs disappeared almost overnight, and with them much of the economic stability that had sustained local families for generations.
