Middlesbrough
29 June 2026
Middlesbrough is one of the youngest major towns in the North of England, yet few places have played a more significant role in Britain’s industrial story.
Before the 19th century, it was little more than a small farming settlement on the south bank (the Yorkshire side) of the River Tees. The discovery of ironstone in the Cleveland Hills and the rapid expansion of rail and port infrastructure transformed Middlesbrough into a centre of iron and steel production. So dramatic was its growth that it became known as Ironopolis, supplying materials for railways, bridges, ships, and engineering projects across the world.
