Newcastle
23 December 2025 & 28 April 2026
In the mid-20th century, Newcastle was defined by shipbuilding, coal exports, and heavy engineering along the River Tyne. These industries shaped not only the skyline - filled with cranes and smoke - but also the identity of its communities, grounded in skilled labour and strong working-class traditions. From the 1970s onwards, industrial decline brought widespread job losses and economic hardship. Shipyards closed, coal traffic diminished, and large areas of the riverside fell into dereliction.
