Peterlee
27 January 2024
Peterlee was founded in 1948 as part of the post-war ‘New Town’ programme, designed to provide modern housing and improved living conditions for mining families. Named after Peter Lee - a prominent trade unionist - it remains the only town in the UK to be named after a recent individual, embedding its political and industrial heritage into its very identity. Planned with ambition, Peterlee was intended to represent a new beginning: a place of light, space, and opportunity.
