Salford
6 December 2024
Situated on the west bank of the River Irwell, adjacent to Manchester, Salford grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution as a centre of manufacturing, engineering, textiles, and inland shipping. Dense terraces, factories, and docklands came to define the city, providing employment for generations while also creating some of the crowded living conditions that characterised industrial northern England.
The decline of traditional industries during the late 20th century brought profound economic and social challenges. Large-scale housing clearance programmes transformed many districts, replacing ageing Victorian housing with modern developments and new residential neighbourhoods.
