Humber Bridge

Stockport occupies a strategic position at the south-eastern edge of Greater Manchester, a town whose growth was driven by industry, transport, and trade. During the Industrial Revolution it became a major centre for hat-making, cotton spinning, and textile manufacturing, while its location on the River Mersey and at the junction of important transport routes helped establish its economic significance. Much of this industrial heritage remains visible today in the town’s mills, warehouses, and surviving Victorian commercial architecture.

The arrival of the railways transformed Stockport during the 19th century. Together with the railway station and associated infrastructure, Stockport Viaduct stands as a powerful symbol of the engineering ambition that helped connect the industrial North to the wider nation.
