Waldridge, to the southwest of Chester-le-Street, is a place where the legacy of industry has gradually given way to the restoration of a landscape of important environmental significance.

Following the opening of Waldridge Colliery in 1831, the small rural village of Waldridge became a thriving township - known simply as Waldridge Colliery - with the pit employing hundreds of men and boys and attracting workers and their families to the area. By the turn of the 20th century, the workforce had grown to more than 500.
