Warrington
30 October 2025
Warrington was founded by the Romans at an important crossing place on the River Mersey. Historically, it was located within Lancashire but, following the local government reforms in 1974, for administrative purposes it became a borough within the ‘new’ county of Cheshire.
It is a town shaped by industry and movement, its identity closely tied to the networks that pass through it. Although intended for another purpose and a location far away from Warrington, the Golden Gates stand as a tribute to a past defined by steel-making, engineering, and industrial labour. These industries once anchored the town’s economy and social life, embedding a strong working identity that continues to inform its character today.
