Whitehaven
12 October 2026
The coastal town of Whitehaven is a town shaped by maritime trade, coal mining, and Georgian planning. Developed in the 17th and 18th centuries as a major port, it became one of Britain’s earliest planned industrial towns, exporting coal across the Irish Sea and building wealth through shipping and commerce. Its harbour, grid-pattern streets, and Georgian architecture still reflect this period of prosperity and ambition.
