Wigan occupies a unique place in Britain’s cultural and industrial history. For many, the town is synonymous with The Road to Wigan Pier (1937) by George Orwell - the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950) - a hugely influential account of working-class life in the industrial North. Orwell’s observations of miners, unemployment, poor housing, and economic hardship created one of the defining literary portraits of inter-war Britain. While Orwell’s depiction was not without controversy locally, it ensured that Wigan became a powerful symbol of the experiences, struggles, and resilience of Britain’s industrial communities.
